Bonnie McKee - untitled, edited file

I totally forgot about this! Dev's voice is def on the chorus, but the history of this song is quite long. To the best of my memory...

  1. The original version of "Don't Hurt It" was written by Dev and The Cataracs during their writing camp in Central America back in 2010. The demo was produced at The Indie-Pop Sweat Shop. At this point, it was a solo song with fully original verses from Dev only. (A slightly sped-up version of this version exists and was created as a proof of concept)
  2. Timbaland came into the picture when the song was with Manny Marroquin for mixing at Larrabee Studios in LA. Timbaland wrote an original verse and layered it on the original production demo to see how it would fit.
  3. Timbaland ended up reproducing the song slightly, which is the version that would eventually be released on the US version of Dev's debut album, The Night the Sun Came Up.
  4. During the same time as #2, The Cataracs were tapped to remix KPop group Girls' Generation's "Bad Girl." Since "Don't Hurt It" was effectively sitting on a shelf during this time, they took Dev's vocals and spliced it into their remix of "Bad Girl."

While I don't have confirmed info on when Bonnie came into the picture, I can surmise that she probably got a hold of the first demo and tried her hand at writing new verses for Dev (which explains why Bonnie's vocals are produced in the Dev-esque style). I say this because the instrumental production on Bonnie's version is the same as Dev's solo and Timbaland's first, which both use the original production from The Indie-Pop Sweat Shop. All this to say, Bonnie's version probably came before Timbaland got involved, but it didn't go anywhere because Dev ended up going with Timbaland's version.

Bonnie gained a lot of listeners on Spotify after her collaboration with The Midnight was released 2 weeks ago:

It's been two months since she released the Electric Heaven version with Kiesza, and the final show of the tour happened a week ago. I hope we get some news soon about the deluxe edition of Hot City.

I saw that too. I was hoping she would release before any Britney fans posted Wild Card publicly. But unfortunately some fans have no respect

I LOOOVE The Midnight and was very surprised to see a Bonnie feature on their new album!

As for Hot City deluxe, I highkey think it's not coming anymore, feels less likely every time. I'll of course be here for it if it comes, but I doubt it does. Not that it feels so necessary now that the album was released, I think it'd be even better if she moved on to a different era next year or something.

I’m sad to admit it but I agree with the idea it seems unlikely now. Maybe it will come next year? But I’m thinking she might just move on all together at this point. Not trying to doom post ofc, because she has come through in the past, but maybe she just didn’t believe in the material. (She did say on the podcast back in June that she was struggling with the material because she thought the songs were scrapped for a reason.) I hope she does release it though, I’ve been yearning for Outlaw for ages and I wanna hear Dashboard in full.

At this point, I would be okay if she scrapped the deluxe and just focused on a new album in 2026. Tack on the "Electric Heaven" remix onto the digital editions of Hot City if she feels it necessary (I do not believe it is), and start fresh in 2026. It is time.

I personally think the deluxe is still coming. She managed to get full rights to re-record Somebody's Gonna Get Hurt, that if I recall correctly was really hard to get back. So I feel like she wants to complete that
