The two that stick out to me in recent-ish years are Britney/Xtina/Madonna at the 2003 VMAs and Miley at the 2013 VMAs. Queens of controversy

Lady Gaga's Paparazzi's performance still gives me goosebumps. I love it so much

This iconic performance!   She was so raw and improvisational but every note was pitch perfect and carried so much emotion. Truly Whitney at her best!
