South Korean pop star Kim Jong-huyun, one of the five members of the popular K-pop group SHINee, has died at 27. According to BBC's Korean Service, Jonghyun was taken to a hospital after being found unconscious at an apartment in Seoul. Heavily involved in the group's songwriting and production, Jonghyun was an accomplished singer and dancer who helped form the band in 2008.

The Korean Herald reported that Jonghyun was rushed to the hospital in a state of cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead after a team at the hospital performed CPR on him Monday afternoon (Dec. 18). The singer's sister alerted police to check on her brother, telling officials that he sent a series of text messages that included such words as "last goodbye."

SHINee, the five-member group signed to S.M. Entertainment, released their debut EP Replay in 2008. Jonghyun recently played a series of solo shows at the SK Olympic Handball Stadium in Seoul Olympic Park on Dec. 9-10. SHINee, sometimes referred to as "The Princes of K-Pop," released their fifth album, Five, earlier this year and toured Japan through April. S.M. Entertainment issued a statement on Jonghyun's death at press time, confirming his death and noting that a private funeral will be held.
